Dog Treats -Buyer Beware

The FDA has issued a statement regarding chicken jerky treats after they conducted tests on the products I originally mentioned in this article. More news can be found at:
This news bulletin is they type that makes a pet owner’s blood boil. Just now, August 22, 2007 over five months since the Menu tainted product scandal was finally announced, there is yet another report of more products pulled off the shelves, this time its at Walmart. More products are being pulled off shelves daily, which are sending off alarm bells everywhere.
Apparently two more brands of dog treats made in China, were pulled -only after consumers said their dogs got sick. As outlined in the article here on Dog Treats this is due to the bacterial content during the manufacturing process in China. More bad news for Chinese importers. Apparently the company that makes this product is Import-Pingyang Pet Product Company of Shanghai, China.
The Associated Press report indicates a chihuahua died in Philadelphia from digesting the treats from Walmart. The autopsy performed showed a massive bacterial infection due to e coli bacteria.
The brand sold by Walmart is called ” Bestro Chicken Jerky”, the FDA report indicates to stop buying these products. Walmart has actually had to rig their cash registers just to make sure their own sales clerks do not accidentally sell them. That says that, these products are still on the shelves. All pet food companies should take the measures to review their own product lines, and Walmart could have removed this danger, over five months ago.
It seems that we are not finished hearing about more problems with the dog food chain, this time its with bacteria added to the mix.
It is more puzzling as to why more regulations, inspections are not coming from the federal government. The pet food industry itself, has not self-monitored its own industry, therefore there must be stronger measures by government.
Retailers that sell these products should be raising their standards on the products their buyers travel overseas to purchase, and the standards of the companies they are dealing with overseas. Perhaps, a little more attention to ingredients, and less obsession with the profit margins would save some lives of dogs and cats.
We do not have controls in place to determine the manufacturing processes in this country let alone other countries, and the guarantees are just not there.
These days there are just too many diseases and sickness coming from other countries.
You can only cut so many corners on making a product until you sacrifice quality, and endanger the health of your consumers for the sake of cost saving measures.
For better choices, we should perhaps stick to our own pet food producers and farms in this country. The ingredients used in pet foods, that are grown on our farms produce better quality foods. There are certainly many wholesome ingredients available here, and it certainly would help the farmers.
The organic farming industry is and will continue to growing by leaps and bounds, as consumers will be actually forced to buy better quality products, that are being offered on the market today. We are beginning to find the reasons why illness is so prevelant in our pets. Its in the food.

This is disgusting what passes for treats for pets, and Walmart should be banned from every selling things made in China for pets to eat. Your right Teri, its enough to make you boiling mad. I am not shopping in stores that sell garbage.
