Dog Liver Disease and Nutritional Therapy
Feb 11th, 2008 by Teri
The busiest organ in your dog’s body is the liver and its working day and night to get rid of the junk so when it doesn’t work it can be fatal.
Hepatitis, jaundice, hepatic lipidosis and chirrosis are all forms of Liver Diseases in dogs, that result in symptoms such as: vomiting, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes, and loose bowels can be all signs of liver malfunctioning in your pet. Although the yellowing of the white part of the eye can be caused by a snake bite, blood parasites, and infections, therefore you should seek the advice of a veterinarian who can perform the right tests.Holistic health such as a short fast followed by clean filtered water ( not tap water) and later doses of Vitamin C from 500 mg to 2,000 mg. depending on the dog’s size. Glandular supplements like thymus gland are essential to liver health, and beta carotene, multiple vitamin and mineral supplements all can detoxify your dogs’ liver.
Give your dog raw carrot juice daily to start 2 tablespoons a day and slowly increase to 4-6 tablespoons a day. Start with fresh carrot juice and grated carrots added into a meal, and cats derive detoxifying benefits from cod liver oil.
Reduce the amount of fat in your pet’s diet to give the liver a rest from breaking down fats. Again high quality organic foods are a must here if your dealing with a dog who’s health is compromised and a vital organ is failing.
Give digestive enzymes to break down foods through the stomach to the intestines will also help as well as acidophilus supplements.
Apple cider vinegar can be added in small amounts to detoxify the liver as well as supplement with Vitamin B from a high quality source.
Herbal Therapy:
I have taken Milk Thistle myself for detoxifying my own liver also blood cleansing herbs such as: red clover, yellow dock, nettles and dandelion herbs all work very well.
What ever the causes of your dog’s toxic liver disease these simple remedies can support the liver back to optimum health.
