Dear Rita:
So glad you realized the bacteria content of those rawhide treats are dangerous, and most of the problem is the lack of regulations governing pet products. In my article of July 2007 entitled:
“Toxic Pet Treats”
( here is the link : http://doghealth1.com/2007/07/18/dog-treats/
I discussed the dangers in that even the workers who handle the treats are getting infections, and bacterial diseases.
My article days ago of dry dog food causing salmonella poisoning in pet owners is a concern for the Center for Disease Control.
I am so glad that you were able to stop Joyee from consuming any more treats.
In my next article I can give you some great recipes for making dog biscuits at home as a treat, which is safer than taking chances on the pet foods available in stores. Thanks very much for your comments.
That was really depressing…. how sad! How do you ever know unless you buy fresh organic food from the farmer’s market and make it yourself?
Helen, I’m so sorry for your loss. I know exactly what you are going through. We lost a cocker spaniel, “Dusty” 15 yrs. ago and it nearly killed me and I swore then I’d never let myself get close to another animal again. Well, I’m eating those words because last July, I adopted a 6 yr. old cocker spaniel named Joyee and we bonded the minute we met.
My sister, bless her, loves Joyee to pieces, but she doesn’t know anything about what’s good to give a dog and what’s not. So if she’s out she’s always picking something up for her. Last weekend she had gotten these rawhite treets which I never buy for her. She had already given her one and gave me the rest of the pack. Thank goodness Joyee only ate one because it said to wash your hands with soap and water after handling the treat!! I’m thinking if there’s something in it that is that bad that I need to be sure and wash my hands with soap and water, then something isn’t rigth here. Of course the treat was made in China. It’s a good thing it wasn’t cold the next day because we spent alot of time outside because Joyee’s tummy was messed up. Needless to say, I threw the rest of the treats away.
I think these Manufacturers in China and other places who try to pass off all this crap in the foods they sell for our animals which hasn’t been tested properly because they only see them and “animals” not living, breathing, beings who are part of our family and in some cases who have made such a profound impact on our lives and it really makes me mad.

That was so sad to lose such a beautiful cat to the stupidity of pet food manufacturers. It is like losing a member of the family.
I hope they have learned their lessons but as you say in the article not much has changed.
