You hear of stories of dogs saving their owners life and here is just one more story to add to the countless times a pet has through their own intelligence come to the rescue of people.
This story is of a woman named Suann Decourcey who is a nurse in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.
Suann has a Wheaten terrier who’s name is Maggie May as Suann is a big Rod Stewart fan and is named after one of his songs which I dearly love. Ironically the song has words like ” wake up Maggie”. In this case, it was Maggie who was doing the waking up for Suann.
Well Maggie May came to the rescue one morning when after Suann was feeling tired and laid down for a rest. Maggie May several hours later woke Suann up by licking her face, sitting on her and making pecular sounds.
The dog did not give up trying to wake up her owner to alert her to an impending danger. Suann’s husband Cyril woke up and realized they were in grave danger. You have to remember Maggie May was only 7 months old at the time, how and why did she do this?
The carbon monoxide monitor was shrieking a sound that because Decourcey is deaf in one ear, she would never had heard the alarm. She called 911 immediately and the fire trucks arrived telling the occupants to leave the house.
The fire and gas crews reported the carbon monoxide levels had reached extremely high levels which would have killed the owners of the house if they were to remain.
A broken furnace apparently was the cause for the leak and the fire department stated they were lucky to be alive with the high toxic levels.
It turns out Maggie May was rescued by Suann at an animal shelter and was not Suann’s first choice as a new pet as there were 7 other females waiting to be adopted. Suann and Cyril became empty nesters after the kids left home they wanted to adopt a dog which is common these days. Maggie came to Suann in the shelter basically saying “ pick me” and out of 7 other female dogs, Maggie became a member of the family in May of 2007.
Now what are the odds that another dog would have been picked and Maggie May would not have been able to accomplish this noble deed to save her owner from impending danger?
As we save dogs in animal shelters every year - you just never know how fate has a hand in the dog you chose one day could save your own life.

In the past 40 years the Canada Animal Hall of Fame has inducted 138 animals and continues each year including Maggie May who now has a place of honour among the 114 dogs, 23 cats and a horse that are all winners of the award.
Needless to say Suann has deeper and closer friendship than every before with her special rescue dog Maggie May. It’s a good idea to get your furnace checked every year for leaks especially in older homes. As well check your carbon monoxide alarm and make sure the device is working properly.
Whenever you are looking for a new pet to add to your home always chose an Animal Rescue Shelter in your area, you just never know how good it can be to have one of these special dogs. It could save your life one day.

Every animal I have is a rescued pet. For the last 15 years its been this re-occuring pattern that these dogs and cats enter out lives in strange ways. (even two sheep!) And I would have it no other way.
It breaks my heart to hear and see some of the stories of these pets that desperately need homes. They make the best pets and sometimes need a little more time to adjust but they know they are lucky and they add to a family.
Great post!!!
Thanks very much for your comments and I commend you for adopting rescued dogs and cats Denise, that is so heartwarming that you open your home to these fine animals.
Maggie May is just one example of a dog that came into a woman’s life for a reason and saved her life. I am sure your pets are so lucky to have you as a mom, did you say 2 sheep also? That is fantastic!!
We all need to spread the word and keep the pet stores from buying dogs from the puppy mills.
Teri
Dogs are more atuned to us and our surroundings than we are to them. Oh, to be so wise as to have the rational of humans and the instincts of dogs.
So true Kathy so very true! It was an amazing story sent in by Rita another reader who is attuned to the intelligence of dogs. Thanks for the comment Kathy and a big shout out to Rita, thank you for the story.
