Prescription Drugs found in Your Dog’s Drinking Water Update Part 1:
Back in June we posted an article on pets drinking tap water in the US which is laced with prescription drugs.
Investigations are underway but the response from utility companies is that the concentration is so low that it has no negative effect on human health but they are not environmentalists nor scientists. Bottled water is no better as it is recycled tap water with the same drugs although there is no testing of bottled water by the FDA or any other agency.
When you consider the population of the United States which is 308,824,646, you can see why this is of great concern when most of the population is excreting drugs into the drinking water system. You have to think about what is in the water your giving to your dog or cat.
Today many people take prescription drugs which are rampant and some drugs such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, estrogens, seizure meds which have severe side effects. A chemical combination of all those drugs it would seem ludicrous to deny there is an effect on human and pet health. CNN in its report by Elizabeth Cohen and Karen Chetry of American Morning program talk about the Associated Press who did the research and here are the drugs in their findings:
Mood stabilizers Hormones Cholesterol drugs
Sex hormones Antibiotics Anti-anxiety drugs
Blood pressure drugs Anti-Seizure drug cancer drugs
Cold remedies ulcer medication headache medications
Not to mention over the counter medications that are used more frequently than prescribed drugs but number into the millions of people who are using all these drugs.
In Atlanta the headquarters for CNN they found anti-biotic and blood pressure drugs. IIn Cincinnati cholesterol reducing drugs and estrogens were found in tap water.
In New York City seizure drugs and anti-anxiety medications were found.Philadelphia holds the record of 56 drugs, New York City at 16 drugs and Northern New Jersey 13 different drugs. Elizabeth states there are small amounts but when you combine all 56 drugs.
The Associated Press went to the Environmental Protect Agency to determine what testing if any or action is being taken for this potential health hazard. The EPA’s response is quote: “We are taking it very seriously. We recognize there’s a growing concern about the presence of pharmaceuticals in our water. We are evaluating the potential health effects of contaminants at low levels, where they occur and how best to remove them”. This was issued by Ben Grumbles, EPA Assistant Administrator for Water.

Even the sewage treatment plants cannot remove these drugs therefore it would stand to reason to improve the filtration system to remove all drugs from the nation’s drinking water for human and pet health.
If you were to have an allergic reaction to this combo cocktail of prescription drugs you could be dead. The drug companies have no comment on the costs of cleaning up the water supply.

It just amazes me the extent to which we are exposed to toxins in our daily lives. I give my dog with cancer filtered tap water and I know it’s still not clean. They seem to make attempts at cleaning things up but their attempts are not whole-hearted and things improve only minimally. Interesting topic, thanks. Joanne and Buddy.
