Presidential Dogs – First Dogs of Presidents the Annual First Dog Shows of the Westminister Dog Show, the 134th Annual Westminister Dog Show presentation did not fail to please dog lovers around the world. Why does you sweet lovable dog turn into an aggressive snarling dog when you put it on a leash and go to a park or are walking with them?
There are very good reasons why dogs become aggressive, and bark or pull on a leash and become Leash Re-active.
Dogs will Naturally Pull on a Leash
The dog feels restricted or prevented from either protecting itself or you the pack leader from a perceived threat and is making a show or display of aggression to fend off the approaching dog. This is in the dog’s nature to do so and a few tips will help you to control your dog when they become Leash Reactive. This happens when your dog is unfamiliar with the approaching dog and assumes it is a threat therefore it needs to become aggressive by standing on its two rear legs, barking and reacting because it feels restrained to protect you or itself.
Leash Tips for Reactive Dogs
This is the time where you must control your dog and watch for the reactions of both dogs. One way is to distract your dog from what it perceives as a threat.
1) Keep your dog distracted with a treat or biscuit until the other dog passes by your dog.
2) Step in front of your dog and place yourself between your dog and the other dog.-this establishes that you are the “leader” and that your dog should stand down.
3) Give the leash a tug, make your dog sit and obey commands, put your hand on the dog’s front chest and tap on it. This establishes that you are the pack leader and the dog will obey you.
4) Do this every time your dog becomes leash reactive -and over time your dog will become less reactive. This works the best with my dog or else my arm would be stretched beyond its length.
5) When your dog rear’s up or becomes aggressive -put your fully stretched out hand in front of its face. It will back down immediately and resume a normal position. You must step in front of the dog for it to understand it should back down.
6) Praise your dog each time when it does not react with a treat, or praise them for behaving properly. Remember Reward for Good Behavior and show dismay with bad behavior.
The quickest way to avoid leash pulling or aggressive behavior is the stepping between your dog and the other dog-works every time. In this way you are telling your dog this is not proper behavior and you are “stepping in to stop the behavior.”
Your dog will get the message eventually and stop the pulling action each time your dog sees another dog.
Remember dogs recognize friend or foe by smelling them and this is their main goal is to smell the other dog, which is not necessary to you -but is natural to the other dog.
Smart Dog Tip
Other owners will tell you or ask you if your dog is “friendly” and if their dog is not friendly -try to steer your dog away from them. Take the other owner’s word for it and avoid the dog.
Dog Breeds
Some dogs are breed to protect property and person and with these dogs are to be watched carefully when venturing in public. Boston Terriers are one of those breeds

Learn to do some leash training with your dog when you are alone in the park and there are no distractions. Simple commands to stop your dog from ‘feeling threatened” can help with your dog learning not to be aggressive in public while on a leash.

Feeding and Grooming
The best foods for your Miniature Schnauzer are homemade lean meats and vegetables. Commercial food should be avoided if it can be since the digestive tract of Miniature Schnauzers is relatively weak and susceptible to problems. Some pure breed Miniature Schnauzers may also be allergic to high cereal content, something that is a mainstay of cheaper commercial dog foods. Feeding and Grooming

While the short coat of a Pug is generally easy to maintain, the wrinkles need special attention. Brushing and combing should be done at least a couple of times a week, while making sure that all the folds are attended to. While a bath is not necessary and a dog shampoo should be used only when absolutely necessary, cleaning the folds daily is required to prevent skin infection. Clipping the nails regularly is also required since Pug nails tend to grow fairly quickly.
Exercise
Being a small dog, the Pug needs relatively lower levels of exercise. A walk in the park is enough to keep them fit. However, this needs to be combined with diet regulations since Pugs tend to overeat. While exercising your Pug, make sure that you do not leave them in the sun for too long since Pugs are not accustomed to extreme heat or cold.
Special care and health concerns
- The wrinkled face and large eyes of the dog combine to create a situation where the drainage from the eyes can get caught in the folds of the skin. Dust particles and other dirt can also get inside the folds of the wrinkles and start to cause infections. Therefore the folds of a Pug’s face should be cleaned carefully.
- While obesity has been mentioned above, it is important to reiterate that obesity can cause other health issues that may be fatal in the long run.
- The long palate accompanied by the short snout causes Pugs to ‘reverse sneeze’. This manifest itself in gasps and snorts that emanate from the Pugs mouth from time to time. While some owners tend to feel that their pet is asphyxiating, there is actually no reason to worry about a ‘reverse sneeze’
- Pugs are also more susceptible to eye injuries like puncture wounds and scratched cornea.
- Demodectic mange is another health concern with Pugs. The weakened immune system causes Pugs to catch diseases more easily than other dogs.
- Since Pugs have a short snout and smaller breathing passages, they tend to have breathing issues too. This also causes the additional concern with being able to use panting effectively to regulate temperature. Extreme heat can actually result in death and therefore it is essential to keep your Pug in areas that have proper cooling or have a temperature that does not go beyond 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pugs are also known to suffer from an inflammation of the brain called ‘granulomatous meningoencephalitis’. This chronic condition is specific to Pugs and is also called ‘Pug dog encephalitis (PDE)’. The cause of the inflammation is considered to be hereditary in nature and there is no cure. In most cases, the pet either dies or is euthanized in a few months.
- Another health issue that Pugs, like other brachycephalic dogs, are vulnerable to is hemivertebrae. While the screwtail is also a hemivertebrae, when this occurs in other places, it can cause severe pain and then paralysis. However, it should be noted that this defect is generally congenital and can be detected with an x-ray as soon as a Pug puppy is born.
- Special care is required for Pug female dogs during pregnancy and childbirth. Small dogs such as these may require a Caesarian section and sometimes Pug female dogs also show apathy towards their newborns.

The First Dog is home at last and the Obama Family could not be happy with their new First Dog at the Whitehouse. First dog Bo has made a splash in Washington on the south lawn of his new home with the President and his family.
President Obama is quoted as saying “he has Star Quality” about his new First Dog which is a Portuguese Water Dog breed, a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. In this exlusive video you will see Bo romping around with Sasha and Milia Obama and the President with his wife Michelle all taking turns guiding Bo to his first press conference. Bo did very well and galloped around on his leash for a 6 month old puppy, well at least he did not get out of hand like Barney Bush who snapped at a reporter. The next step in training puppies is to walk the dog often and let him go outside. A special place can be arranged where Bo will go on his daily walks. Puppy training at six months of age for a dog are the formative years of good dog training. Regular feeding times also will be important and keeping the dog’s feeding and walking times in tune with the daily Whitehouse schedule for stability in Bo’s life. The Obamas officially welcome their new Portuguese Water dog today to the Biggest Dog house that being the Whitehouse as he joins the First Family officially as the First Dog.
His duties primarily will be domestic surveillance, official waker upper, keeping the President fit on his runs, and also the Official Whitehouse door greeter.
Bo Gets Big Welcome to the Whitehouse by Obama First Family
Top Positions Bo may be filling is ChairDog of Women’s Health Policy which is a job that is subject to the control of the President. Or he can be employed as the First Lady’s Wardrobe Manager as he has a flair for design with the colorful lai’s he wears on occasions.
All in all Bo Obama will be the constant companion of Sasha Obama and Malia Obama and I am sure as they grow up together they will have a joyous, fun loving time with Bo. Portugese Water dogs will keep them very busy and also very fit young ladies. The good part of the exercises is that as women their bones will be stronger and healthier as they age and so will Bo’s bones.
He may also be the Head of the Department of Dog, which heads up the Property Patrol Unit guarding all hedges and bushes along the perimeter of the Whitehouse garden. Bo Obama may also be used in the Media Affairs department guaranteed to bring smiles and cheers even when there is bad news in the air.
All in all the healthier environment with a dog in the House will guarantee that President Obama who complains about living in a bubble, now has a new buddy to share that bubble. Bo will bring the President back down to earth, and grounding him to the fact that although he is expected to be “SuperHuman” with God like attributes -he is only one man in one country.
As the challenges that lie ahead will gray President Obama’s hair and make him question the motives of his opponents while guiding the ship towards the greater good of all- Bo will bring him the joy of a pet dog- that only a dog lover can understand.

Portuguese Water dogs are known to be good swimmers, friendly, energetic, loving to kids, but also strong willed leaders
The Lillibed Company from Europe has already given President Obama gifts of a Presidential Bowl and Presidential Bed for the new arrival at the Whitehouse.
We are sure Bo will fit in nicely and will carry out his duties with diligence and care and make us dog lovers proud.
Obama Sasha and Milia Greet the First Dog
A happy tail wag was had by all. In the midst of hostage taking, a recessive economy and job losses – we can all use a good news story. Better times are ahead and we have to enjoy the wag of a tail as life’s simple pleasures are priceless.
