Jan. 06, 2010  This is a True Story of a Dog’s Courageous Protection of its Owner – a Young Boy who was saved from being attacked by a cougar.

A brave retriever named Angel saved a young boy in Canada from a vicious attack from a cougar and saved the boy’s life.  It happened in Boston Bar, British Columbia a small town when the boy Austin Forman who is 11 years old was in the backyard gathering firewood at dusk.  His dog Angel was strangely acting up and must have sensed the presence of a threat in the area.

Angel started to pace and followed the boy closely as is the instinct of a dog trying to protect the boy when all of a sudden the dog starting running towards a charging cougar to fend off the attack.  Angel got right into the thick of it and stopped the cougar from advancing towards Austin.

Austin ran into the house while Angel fought off the cougar and called 911 and when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived they found the cougar had captured Angel and was chewing on the neck area of Angel.

The police officer Chad Gravelle immediately shot the cougar and found Angel had been badly injured by the attack.  Blood from the wounds where the cougar had chewed on Angel’s head and neck showed puncture holes and also on the dog’s leg. She remained lifeless but suddenly got up and was coughing up a bit of blood.  Angel was taken to the vet immediately and is recovering just fine.

Some may say it is mankind who are living closer to the natural habitat of wild animals and they are forced to try to find food where ever possible.  The cougar was a young and skinny female looking for food.   The home where Austin lives is near the wilderness area and the Trans Canada Highway.  Angel  is recovering away from the home for now and Austin is not collecting firewood at night but is leaving his chores for the daylight hours.

Angel is a beautiful dog that the Forman’s adopted although Austin’s father did not want the dog -he can’t say enough about the dog now that she saved his son’s life.

Basics of Dog Training

It’s essential for Dog parents like you to know certain basic factors that determine your relationship with your Dog and can go a long way in training him effectively.

Before you begin training your Dog, it is absolutely essential that you build a loving bond with him. This is important as it helps you to understand his needs and instincts and also allows your Dog to have complete trust in you.

Know more about Dog care from this free mini course

Let us see how…….

How To Bond With Your Dog

Building a bond with your Dog is the first and the most crucial step involved in training him successfully. As soon as you bring your Dog home, you must first try to develop a caring and loving relationship with him in order to win his trust and confidence.

When Dogs are secure in the knowledge that they belong to the family, they are more likely to respond better to their owners’ training commands. Just like with any relationship, there must be mutual trust and respect between you and your Dog.

Trust takes time to develop and respect comes from defining boundaries and treating any breach of those boundaries with firmness and fairness.

Without enforceable limitations, respect can’t be developed. And when there is no respect, building a bond with your Dog is almost impossible.

4 Golden Rules To Building A Relationship With Your Dog :

  • Spend quality time together;
  • Take him out in the world and experience life together;
  • Establish and promote a level of mutual respect; and
  • Develop a way of communicating to understand each other’s needs.

Building a bond with your Dog will not only help you manage him better but will also make your Dog calm, quiet and an extremely well-adjusted pet.

Love Your Dog and He Will Love You back

Once you’re succesful in building a bond with your Dog, you can rest assured that training him and teaching him new and clever tricks will be a cakewalk.

Learn how to bond with your Dog with this free mini course.

How Your Dog Learns…

Your Dog’s learning period can be divided into five phases:

The Teaching Phase – This is the phase where you must physically demonstrate to your Dog exactly what you want him to do.

The Practicing Phase – Practice makes Perfect. Once a lesson is learnt, practice with your Dog what you have just taught him.

The Generalizing Phase – Here you must continue practicing with your Dog in different locations and in an environment with a few distractions. You can take your Dog out for a walk, or to a nearby park and command him to practice whatever you’ve taught him.

Practicing the learned lessons in multiple locations and in the presence of small distractions will help him learn and retain lessons better .

The Testing Phase – Once you’re sure that your Dog has achieved almost 90% success….he responds correctly almost every time you give a command, you must start testing his accuracy in newer locations with a lot of distractions.

Example: Take him to the local shopping mall and ask him to obey your command. He may not come up with the correct response the very first time you do this, but you must not lose hope.

The idea is to test your Dog to see how he responds in an environment which is new to him. Set-up a situation where you are in control of the environment and your Dog.

There are only 2 possibilities:

  • Your Dog succeeds!!! (Trumpets please!)
  • In case your Dog fails, re-examine the situation. Review and/or change your training. Then try testing again.

Keep on testing until he succeeds. Follow the rule of the 3 Ps – patience, persistence, praise.

Internalizing PhaseFinally, comes the extremely rewarding phase where your Dog does everything he is taught to do even without your commands.

Remember:

  • Never scold your Dog if he fails. It’s not his fault. You have failed as a trainer!
  • You must be patient and persistent for your efforts to show rewards.
  • Appreciate and love your Dog when he does it right! A little encouragement will work wonders for your Dog.

No more cargo compartment for Fido -no not when your pet can travel on Pet Airways the new pet airlines specifically for pets. This airline with transport your cat or dog to its destination in warmth and comfort with friendly flight attendants who are pet friendly and attentive to your pets needs.

For years pet owners fretted about traveling with pets on airplanes when they get put into a cage and into the cargo compartment where the temperatures can be very cold since the cargo area is not heated. Many pets have made traumatic trips in the past but now with Pet Airlines -it is a whole new world in pet travel.

Have you ever seen a pet dog in their traveling crate go around and around in the luggage carousel waiting to be picked up by their owners who are probably waiting at the other end of the airport? The CEO and President of Pet Airways is David Wiesel and he says “ you see on Pet Airways, your pets aren’t packages, they are pawsengers.”

Pets that travel on the other commercial airlines are often traumatized for life from the experience and can have a heart attack or die but pet owners have not had any choices with how their pets are handled. If we were to track a pet on a regular commercial airline especially when they are handled like baggage-not many pet owners would want to repeat the experience.

Pet Airways - A Pet Only Airline

The service starts with you dropping off your pet at the Pet Lounge and they get taken to the pet washroom before takeoff for one last washroom break. Each pet gets a pet attendant for the flight and you can track your pet’s progress on the Pet Tracker which is an online tracking system of the flight. See this at: www.PetAirways.com

The first flight takes off on July 14th for the big Pet Airlines takeoff where all pets will travel in the body of the plane -not the cargo area. Currently flight schedules are:

New York to Chicago, New York to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Chicago,

The company based in Florida has scheduled flights from New York to and from Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver or Washington D.C. Now the FAA leave the pet travel to the airlines and their rules are that your pet -container and all must fit under a seat, which is not a very big space.

Here are more rules and regulations of the Other Airlines :

  • a limit on the number of pets in the cabin

  • a limit on the number of pets that may accompany you on the airplane

  • a requirement that your pet be harmless, inoffensive and odorless

  • a requirement that you be able to produce a recently issued health certificate for your pet

The other Airlines will only accept one or two pets per flight and if they are booked for the flight you want -your out of luck and your pet stays home. Not very pet friendly are they and certainly not very comfortable even for small pets and you can’t bring a large dog like a Golden or a German Sheppard.

The SPCA of San Francisco found that there were 2 million animals transported by the airlines each year that 5,000 of them are seriously injured. Most animals die of suffocation, overheated or overly cold cargo areas with poor ventilation. In some cases if the pet is near a motor as was the case with one airline-the animal got burnt.

The other problem is that veterinarians tell you to give your dog a sedative for the duration of the trip and that in itself can be harmful. With Pet Airways your pet has an attendant to take care of it and keep it occupied for the trip instead of no one looking after it.

Your pet will be offered food and drink for the trip depending on the length of the trip and we don’t really know what movie is playing but we hope the line up is something like this:

Pet Airways -National Flights for Pets Only-Doghealth1.com

Pet Airways -National Flights for Pets Only-Doghealth1.com

Marley and Me

Top Dog – the Dog version of Top Gun

Reservoir Dogs Official Trailer

The Lightening Warrior-starring Rin Tin Tin

Scooby-Doo

101 Dalmatians

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Snow Dogs-plays in December

Benji

White Fang

The Shaggy Dog

I can really see this airline-taking off-pardon the pun but this is a great idea for pet owners who travel and coupled with Pet Hotels- its a dog’s life. Oh by the way don’t try and sneak on board with Fido because -no humans are allowed in the baggage compartment. So fly your pet on Pet Airways-the only way to travel for your pet.  Book your next flight on Pet Airways and rest assured your pet will travel safely with a flight attendant an arrive without trauma to its destination.

In 2007 we posted several articles on the benefits of stem cell research from a company called Vet Stem Regenerative Veterinary Medicine.

We would like to revisit vet stem to see what has transpired in the past years to help dogs overcome diseases and untimely deaths. More than 3,000 horses have received stem cell treatments

Vet Stem Cell Treatments for Dogs-Less Expensive than Surgery

The procedure involves taking some 2 tablespoons of fat tissue from the back of the dogs neck area and it is sent to Vet Stem in California who are the global leaders in veterinary stem cell research. Vet stem has literally performed stem cell transplantation in over 1,000 dogs with great success.

Upon receiving the fat tissue samples vet stem extracts and separates the Adult Stem Cells from the fat tissue. The very same day the stem cells are sent back to a participating veterinarian who then injects the millions of stem cells back into your dog’s bones and joints.  The results can be seen in weeks instead of months later as in surgical procedures.

Use Your Dogs Own Adult Stem Cells to Heal Diseases

If veterinarians “get this” why don’t doctors and government get this? The success stories are here, the trials have been studied -the results are very clearly positively and confirmed to show positive repaired diseases in dogs, and horses. It it works for animals and for humans also. Apparently your dog is getting better medical care than you are at this time.

Cats are healing also and trials are being conducted to heal feline kidney diseases and the Vet Stem Cell Company are on the forefront and are leaders who will only grown by leaps and bounds in the future -healing our pets and animals with this simple procedure.

The cost is far less than surgical intervention and the benefits of stem cell treatments over surgery are many and include:

No cutting of tissue, bones or or surgical errors.
No costs for general anethstetic or pain drugs -before during and after the procedure.
No waiting time to heal from surgery.
No apparatus to help mobility during healing is necessary.
No cost for anethstetic healing time is weeks instead of months.
Cost wise -stem cell treatments are far less than surgical intervention.

A few years ago the Vice President of the Muscular Dystrophy Association commented on the work underway by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh.  The use of stem cell treatments to relieve symptoms of muscular dystrophy in dogs holds promise in defeating the disease in children.  Muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease that occurs in one of every 3,500 male births.

There is also promising results for dogs treated for melanoma by genetically engineering stem cells from bone marrow to destroy cancer proteins as studies held in Britain.  The adult stem cells known as mesenchymal stem cells can attack cancer cells while leaving health cells to thrive.  These studies have been in progress since 2006 and again are showing positive results.

For people and their pets adult stem cell research should be funded and put on the fast track to help relieve pain and suffering and save lives now -rather than later.

The relationship you share with your pooch is symbiotic. He showers you with undying, unconditional affection and companionship. For your part, you provide him with meals, dog treats, a roof over his head, periodic trips to the vet, and your friendship. In many cases, it is a perfect match that only grows with age.

Unfortunately, even the most experienced dog owners at times forget a few of their responsibilities. In today’s article, I’ll give you a few reminders of basic things you need to do (if you haven’t already) in order to keep your canine companion safe, healthy, and happy.

Tip 1 – Alway apply a Leash to your dog when outdoors

A lot of owners feel leashing their dog is cruel and inhibiting. While taking a stroll around the neighborhood, visiting parks, or going to other public places, they’ll leave the leash at home. That’s a bad idea. Even if your pooch has been properly vaccinated and has his tags, keeping him on a leash is best for everyone – including him.

Tip 2 – Spay Or Neuter Your Pet

If you are not a dog breeder, there is no reason not to spay or neuter your pet dog. In fact, doing so can help him live a longer, healthier life. Also, it’s worth noting that one of the leading causes of homeless mutts is that their owners fail to have their pets “fixed.” That leads to a greater number of pooches being placed into shelters and eventually euthanized.

Tip 3 – Enroll Him In Obedience Training

Dogs begin learning how to behave immediately. What’s more, they continue learning throughout their lives. If their bad habits are not curbed, those habits can develop into frustrating behavioral problems. Enroll your pooch into obedience classes. Not only will he learn what type of behavior is acceptable and what isn’t, but the training will also improve the relationship you share together.

Tip 4 – Give Him Exercise

Dogs are physical creatures and as such need daily activity for a wide variety of reasons. First, if you spend most of the day away from home, he’s going to have pent-up energy. He needs a way to release it. Second, daily exercise keeps your dog healthy and enthusiastic. Take him for a walk in the morning and again during the evening. You’ll find that providing exercise for him will keep him happy and healthy.

Loyal for Life

The dog ownerships responsibilities never cease. Indeed, keeping your canine companion healthy and safe requires ongoing vigilance. But, by providing him with the essentials he needs, especially in the beginning, you’ll lay the foundation for a lifelong friendship. Most owners agree that the loyalty and love they share with their dogs is irreplaceable. Take care of your pooch and he’ll remain faithful to you for the rest of his days.

” One Nation Under Dog” is a dog book written by Michael Schaffer is a book every dog lover should read! As Michael puts us into the world of dog – and all the trappings of pet care we can see how this domesticated animal has turned into a family member. As I began reading about their “first dog” Murphy I recalled how I got my latest addition to the family and the joy of having a dog.

Murphy’s story is one of the doting parents who “for the love of dog” we follow in the same footsteps as Mike and his wife travel through the world of a 43 billion dollar industry growing into the next century. The history of dogs is particularly amusing and an eye opener for dog owners on what to look out for -in case you fall into the trappings of dog ownership.

Besides the dog lattes, Bully Sticks and puppy birthday parties – the upscale urban dog today the author takes us through pet bereavement to the pet food industry. The care and feeding of Fido is explained by looking at the stories of obsessions and the changes in our culture from politics to social morals and finally the economics of pet ownership.

If you own a dog you owe it to yourself to get this book and avoid your dog becoming a Prozac-Popping Puppy.  Just simply to avoid the dog park no-no’s and teach yourself how to get accustomed to the new world order – of the dog.

This is a must read book -and highly recommended-and special thanks to Mr. Jason Liebman of New York for sending us a copy of the book – it was a great read!!

They say you are what you eat, and after you have seen the pictures in this video you will think twice about buying cheap dog food or even premium commercial dog food. This is for real, and no amount of packaging, or ads can make this any nicer to watch.

The truth is commercial pet foods have added sawdust and well any refuse they can find -is in dog food. In the USA there are no regulations for pet food, therefore they can put in sand and it would be still called dog food.

Road Kill in Your Dog Food

Road Kill in Your Dog Food

You may want to read this article from a year ago, things have not changed drastically since the pet food poisoning of 2007,  dog food still contains the four D’s.  See :  Premium Dog Foods Hidden Dangers.

We don’t even have standards for human foods nor inspections from foreign ingredients which have poisoned our food supply. Just like the peanut butter scandal – there are no laws in this country. Only in America do corporations get away with this type of greed and total disregard for your pet’s health.

You can bet that President Obama will not be feeding his dog this food, the dog’s organic all the way.
