I wasn’t familiar with the product called Bully Stick or that they were a dog treat so I needed find out what the fuss was about.  The bully stick is made from dried muscle, tendons which sounds less repelling but  basically they are a chew stick.  Bully sticks have been made for many years as a treat for dogs and 100 percent natural at that.

I was recently introduced to the Best Bully Sticks Company which sell bully sticks that are all natural and made from free range Brazilian cattle that graze on non-pesticide grasses. The animals are not fed hormones, or anti-biotics and are basically the “green cattle” that are known to be from Argentina. The sticks may be braided and smoked for extra flavor and available in various lengths for large dogs or smaller dogs.

Bully Sticks are all natural as you will see in this video and they are a good chew for your dog.  Today it is hard to find a good treat and chew to exercise your dog’s  jaw while helping to keep the teeth clean.

Especially if you want to keep your dog from chewing the furniture or your favorite slippers you should start thinking about bully stick chews. Well I had to test them on my dog and was amazed that Whoopie took a liking to them and started chewing on the stick.  The stick does become softer and dissolves easily as time goes by and your dog can spend hours with this chew.  Follow the instructions in this video which is very detailed on explaining how to give your dog one of these special treats.

I did not realize that Bully Sticks also contain vitamins such as calcium, magnesium and hormones.   The bully stick is a long  dried stick which seem hard when you first see them since when they are made they are dried in a high heat. In some parts of the world they are eaten by humans and used for extra stamina for athletes.  Rawhide bones you buy in the store  can break your dog’s teeth because they are too hard and usually with the smoked bones are full of bacteria.

The Best Buy Bully Sticks are of full of flavor and high quality and if you want to spend a few hours of quite time with your dog -just give them a Bully Stick.  It is like giving a bottle of milk to a baby-it is extremely satisfying and beneficial for your dog. Always make sure you supervise your dog when giving them an edible treat of any kind.

Dogs are having to prove their worth these days as people are cutting back on treats and the toys for their favorite pals.  It is most likely the lack of time for some dog owners to make their own home made dog biscuits or dog cookies as my dog knows them to be called.  Cookie is a word my dog knows all to well since she was a puppy

It is funny to see that I have to call her 3 times to “come” and only once when I say the word Cookie, her response time is very quick.  But as most dogs its on their time -not yours and by the third time I say “Whoopie come” -she finally lifts herself off her duff and comes slowly to my side.

I try not to say too many words at once since dogs can only comprehend one word at a time. So if your sitting there -having a conversation with your dog and nothing happens it is because they don’t have a clue as to what you are talking about. You have to just say one word at a time.  Start out with the word  “come” and then gradually add the word ” here”.

My dog perks her ears up and tilts her head to the side slightly several times which means she is really trying to understand me.  Most times I think she has ADDH which is  Adult Dog Deficit Hearing.

I am reading the book “ One Nation Under Dog” written by Michael Schaffer and its quite a read filled with the hard core truths about dog ownership and how it has evolved over time.  I will be doing a review -very shortly in the next few posts – so stay tuned folks.

To Your Dog’s Health,

Teri

The Obama Portuguese Water dog is the big choice that the Obama girls are faced with and the election has been reduced to the final two candidates. The choice between a Portuguese Water Dog or a Labradoodle. The Portie has a rich history from Europe and the breed as with other water dogs are good swimmers with webbed feet.  They are also herd dogs so they herd fish into the nets of Portuguese fisherman of the Algarve in Portugal. The Portie has a non shedding coat and tends to get portly without exercise they will get chubby, so Malia and Sasha will be doing some walking with their new dog.  This breed is highly intelligent, obedient and will retrieve balls and toys for the Obama girls.  They are also good at guarding their house so the Secret Service will have a companion on security detail in the Obama’s first dog. All in all the Portuguese water dog is a five star dog in anyone’s books and some famous celebrities that owned this breed are Jacques Cousteau of course the famous water guy and the actor Raymond Burr from the TV series Ironside. So I would vote for the Portuguese Water hound as the first dog, and the new vote for 2009 is about the Obama’s new dog. We could use some levity after last year’s economic woes. The best part of the whole story is that the Obama’s are adopting from a shelter and that makes dog lovers very happy – for there are many dogs in shelters that need a good home. So if you want to be first in line to join with the Hollywood celeb gossips and adopt a dog as the Obama’s will do to their family, and you are capable of providing not a Whitehouse but a nice house for a dog, go to your nearest animal shelter and find a friend. I still will vote for the Portuguese water dog if it were me, and I am very sure that Whoopie my Puli would welcome a new friend in the house.

Since the dog food recall now almost 18 months ago, Chinese products sold at dollar stores and cheap big box stores like Wal Mart are tainted and dangerous to your dog’s health.

No recalls can protect you from the products that are coming into this country if they are not tested consistently and accurately. Products coming from China have continued to be dangerous to people and animals even babies formula and now drinks such as Ensure for people are suspected as having melamine.

To ensure your pet gets the very healthiest treats, maybe you should try making them yourself as they are easy to prepare and more nutritious.

Recipe for Chicken or Beef Jerky Treats:

Use a food dehydration unit which are made to dehydrate fruits, vegetables and other foods to preserve and dry the product. Sun dried tomatos are made in this manner and are delicious in salads for people.

Or you can use your oven right in your own home.

Cut the chicken or beef in thin strips and lay them on a cookie sheet that is nonstick.

You can add garlic powder or paprika or dry barbeque powder spice for flavor.

Bake at 180 F for at least 4 to 5 hours or leave overnight to the right consistency, which is dry and leathery.

Let the strips cool and put them in plastic bags in the refrigerator.

To save energy do a sheet of chicken, one of beef and also you can use liver strips. You can also freeze a batch for later use and store in plastic bags.

Commercial dog food is generally made for profit and not for your dog because it contains diseased and chemically treated animal by products. No matter how the pretty packaging looks or the billions spent on advertising – these are not healthy foods.

Healthy Home Made Dog Biscuits

It is Saturday morning and you are doing some errands around the house and are tired of hearing what is in dog food and biscuits these days.  I do not blame you at all.  I have a few recipes for you that are low fat, and healthy for your dog to eat as a treat, or for doing a good deed.   Actually the recipes are low in fat, and you can even nibble on one also, they are that tasty.

Make Your Own Dog Biscuits Supplies:

Most of these you will have in your kitchen if you do any baking or make cookies.

1 cookie sheet

1 rolling pin

A few bowls

A measuring cup

A teaspoon, tablespoons

Cookie cutters

Shopping List for Dog Biscuits:

Some flour and ingredients can be found in the bulk bins at stores as well as cookie cutters in shapes such as a bone, or dog, or whatever you wish.

Vegetarian Dog Biscuits

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

3/4 cup dry milk powder

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon  molasses

2 vegetable bouillon cubes; dissolved in

3/4 cup boiling water

1/2 cup carrots steamed and mashed.

1 egg

Preheat oven to 300F. Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to about 1/4″ thick. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter, or strips, or a cutter shape of your own choice. Place on un greased cookie sheet and bake 30 minutes at 300F.

Sunflower Treat Cookie

2 cups whole wheat flour

2/3 cups cornmeal

1/2 cup sunflower seeds

2 tablespoons oil

1/2 cup salt-free vegetable broth

1/2 cup rice milk

In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, and seeds.

Add oil, broth, and rice milk.

Stir to form a firm dough, adding a few tablespoons of water, if necessary to achieve a smooth texture.

Roll out dough on a floured surface.

Cut with cookie cutters.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until crisp.

Store in refrigerator.

Canine Cookies with Carrots

1/2 cup nutritional yeast

1/2 cup wheat germ

6 tablespoons oil

1 teaspoon molasses

1 cup lightly steamed cooked carrots, mashed.

In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, and wheat germ.

In another bowl, mix oil, egg replacer, molasses, and carrots.

Add wet ingredients to dry and stir.  The added beta carotene is not affected

by baking and is a powerful anti-oxident.

Form dough into little balls. Place them on a greased cookie sheet.

Smush each ball with a fork, your thumb or cookie stamp.

Bake at 325 till crunchy.  Store in refrigerator.

Wheat Germ and Garlic Cookies

4 cups whole wheat flour

2 3/4 cups flour

1 1/4 cups vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups wheat germ

1 1/2 cups water

2 teaspoons garlic, minced

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine flours and wheat germ.

In a separate bowl, combine water, oil, and garlic.

Stir wet ingredients into the dry ones and stir.

Knead and roll out onto floured surface.

Roll to 1/4″ thickness and cut carefully with cookie cutters (dough will be somewhat delicate before baking.)

Place on greased cookie sheets and bake for 20 minutes.

Store in refrigerator.

You can make these cookies in large batches and store in air tight container  either in the refrigerator or freezer, for at least a months supply.

Knowing what is in dog biscuits that you made yourself should make you feel good that your dog is not getting unhealthy ingredients and actually promote good health.

Salmonella Bacteria in Dry Dog Food

New Alert for Pet Owners Handling Dry Dog Food Causes Concern with Health Officials

The continuation of the investigation from last year’s outbreak into pet food manufacturer Mars pet food in Pennsylvania has led to more concerns and this time it is affecting humans who handle the dry dog food.   This includes employees at the manufacturing plant, to pet stores, to dog owners and finally to the dogs who consume this food.

All the way through the food chain the spread of salmonella is continuing to the point of another bulletin issued on May 15, 2008  from the Center for Disease Control.

Concerns over salmonella cases in human beings who handled the dog food leads health officials to believe this outbreak is ongoing from one year ago.

Dr. Stephen Ostroff of the Pennsylvania Health Department says its the

first time there has been an out break of disease in humans that associated with the simple handling dry pet food.

Last spring 62 people in 18 states were infected with salmonella and officials say that it was all because of handling dry dog food.

Pet experts, people who handle dog food, including pet owners are being advised not to touch the food or come into contact with this dry dog food.  Some of this manufacturer’s products are still on the shelves and in pet owner’s homes.  This includes treats made by the same company and handling treats could make you sick, let alone what it can do to your dog.

Red Flannel Dry Dog Food

The manufacture is Mars Pet Care US Inc., which sells the food under brand name Red Flannel.  There is also a warning for Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food in the 5 Lb. Bags.

As for reading the warnings on their site it advises you to dump the dog food which can be poisonous into your trash can and return the bag to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.    I would say to pet owners to return the whole bag with its contents to the store, and get a full refund.  If you put these products in the trash it could kill other animals or affect sanitation workers who would come into contact with the product.  I would not want it sitting in my garbage and the pet food manufacturer should be responsible for its disposal as well.

Yes it’s getting that bad.  that you cannot even handle dog food these days without contacting a disease or infection.

Precautions In Your Own Home:

1)     If the food falls on the floor make sure you clean your floor and do not pick it up with your hands.  Use plastic gloves and dispose of it quickly.

2)     Don’t feed your pet in the kitchen and do not handle treats with your hands.

3)     Wash any surfaces of your kitchen that come into contact with this food.

4)     Wash your hands and containers with hot water and soap for 20 seconds.

5)     Get rid of any of these brands of dog food and return to the store.

6)     Do not let any children handle or touch the dog food.

Salmonella Poisoning Symptoms:

An infection that develops into diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, 12 to 72 hours after the infection.  The illness can be treated however it can also lead to the need to be hospitalized.   The infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and to other parts of the body which may cause death.

The elderly, children and people with impaired immune systems are more likely to be severely affected by this infection.

Where Does Salmonella Develop From?

The germ is a group of bacteria that causes diarrhea illness and are microscopic

Creatures that pass from the feces of people or animals to other people or animals.

The more peculiar part of this new warning is that people would normally only acquire this disease if they ate contaminated food.  Today it is the fact that you may have just “handled” bad dog food and you are likely to become ill.

Needless to say I would never want to feed my dog anything that came from a commercial pet food company’s factory.  It’s just not safe anymore for pets and now for people.
