Our dogs get just as restless as we do from time to time and they have difficulty in just settling down at night.  If your dog can’t seem to get comfortable in it’s own skin you could check out the cause of restless dog syndrome.

There are many reasons or causes to your dog’s being restless -too numerous to mention. Hopefully you have taken your dog to an animal care specialist of your choice to check out any hormonal imbalances for example such as thyroid or allergies.

A blood test will reveal if your dog’s hormones are balanced and in order so this is most important to find out the reasons for restlessness and solve the problem.

If your dog is not getting enough exercise this may cause restless behavior which means -more walks.  Your dog may even be bored – you can see that expression on their faces if they doze off during the day they could be tired or bored or both. Also some aggressive behavior can be rooted in restlessness and this should tell you that your dog is not a happy camper.

When you take your dog out for some exercise -do include some play time like fetching, or chasing to get your dog moving and enjoying that special bonding time.

Easy Tips for Restless Dogs

If all of this proves to not improve your dog’s restlessness try adding some stimulating exercises like jumping, or some durable rope exercises where you get on one end and the dog tugs on the other. This must be gentle play time not pulling too hard on the rope to protect your dog’s teeth.  If you put a treat in a Kong this will mentally challenge your dog as it tries to figure out how to get to the treat.

Make sure the balls or Kong’s that your dog plays with are durable and never leave your dog chewing on a toy for any length of time.  If the toys break they could choke on or swallow parts of the toy and that would cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in surgical removal at the vet’s office. You want to make sure your dog is actively engaged and play time helps to exercise and keep your dog healthy under your supervision.

Another solution used by some veterinarians is a natural substance called Melatonin which the human body and animals both are a natural production machine.  Melatonin balances our jet lag problems when we travel across time zones and helps people to get to sleep at the same time each night.  Melatonin also helps mood swings in people and has been proven to prevent cancer.

Bailey is an Akita chox mix dog that goes to the North Worthington Pet Clinic in Columbus, Ohio and had a busy day planned at the clinic.

Melatonin For Dogs

 The arrival of spring brings air borne allergens which plague us and our dogs comes back into our lives in warmer weather.  Spring also brings mosquitoes that swarm and fleas and these all contribute to an itchy dog.   Unhealthy dog foods contribute to your dog’s immune system failure and cause more itching problems.This was not the case years ago and it seems allergens and pollution increased to a point where everyone’s dog is scratching and this is becoming more of the norm instead of isolated cases.

As we enjoy summer there are some handy tips to keep the itching to a minimum.

Itch Tips:

Bathe your dog for 10 minutes with a non commercial soap, using baking soda, Epsom salts or oatmeal organic shampoo will ease the itch for a day or two and calms the inflamation of the skin.

Do not use hot water use warm water, or rub the skin, and do not use a hairdryer, this will irritate and cause more itching. A light squeeze with a towel will help and air dry outside preferably in some sunlight.

Give your dog some EFA’s ( Essential Fatty Acids) such as Primrose Oil and Fish Oils to keep the skin healthy.
