Getting a puppy is an exciting time for both the family and the puppy. When a puppy comes into a home, it will be exposed to a variety of new sights, sounds, and places to explore. This can be a very overwhelming and stressful time for the little critter. It is important for the owner to help the puppy adjust and become a well-behaved adult dog. This will involve teaching it to listen to your commands and desensitizing it to new stimuli.
To make sure your dog is a loyal faithful dog, you can use many ways of training him. All dog training methods are working towards getting respect from the dog for the owner. The goal is in building this relationship between both parties and the right training will focus on this.
One great way of training for dogs is the leash and collar method. There are some other methods that are beneficial but we will focus on this for now.
This type of training for dogs has been in existence for some time now. It has shown how good it works. The best method for your pet will depend on the dog and the breed. Different breeds of dogs have different qualities that they have attained from years and years of breeding.
The same breed might have dogs with varying personalities You should know best which training method is best by your dogs own personality. Use a training system or trainer that you feel will suit your dog best.
When your dog is supposed to be very reliable, leash and collar training is the perfect training method. This type of dog training will be especially useful with police dogs and rescue dogs.
Different levels of forcefulness can be applied in leash and collar training. Even strong pulls to correct the animal. You need to use the right amount of force when pulling the dog as not the right amount for the situation is ineffective.
Teach the dog a certain behavior with the leash on. Use the leash when the dog does not do what it is supposed to correct the dog. The leash is used to communicate to your dog.
Trust is very important when training your dog. Your dog must trust you. You must be able to position your dog in positions he does not want to be in. You will have to get physical sometimes.

It’s important to remember that, just like a small child, a puppy’s attention span is very short. When you teach a young child not to hit, he likely won’t learn the lesson the first time, but instead, gradually after you’ve shown him repeatedly that it’s not okay. Similarly, you will have to be consistent with your dog when training him. Also, when housebreaking your puppy, keep in mind that he is not intentionally being a bad dog; he just has not yet learned what behaviors are acceptable!
Start housebreaking your puppy with a simple feeding schedule. Give him breakfast, lunch and dinner, just as you would yourself. By doing this you will be helping him become regular with his bowel movements. Once he has eaten, wait 20-30 minutes and then take him outside. Watch how long it takes before he is able to void. This will give you an idea of how long to wait the next time you take him out. (Within about a week, you should have his schedule down.) Try to never let him eat at free will, leaving food in his bowl all day, because it will cause him to have accidents and make housetraining all that much more difficult.
Despite the old rules of training a puppy, you should never hit, rub his nose in his messes, or yell at your puppy. By doing this, you are telling him it is bad to relieve himself at all! In addition, most dogs respond negatively to aggressive and mean behavior and it has the opposite effect—they regress in their training rather than advance. Instead, while housebreaking your puppy take him straight outside when he has an accident. In addition, don’t forget the praise! Every time he “goes” where he’s supposed to, praise him lavishly, and soon he will begin to understand exactly what brings praise, and what brings that disappointed face. During the process, don’t forget that full control of the bladder and bowels won’t happen until 16 weeks of age, so don’t expect too much from your puppy in the beginning.
Also helpful in housebreaking a new puppy is to buy a stain remover/ odor relief spray. Household cleaners and sprays cannot be smelled by dogs; only those made for animals will work. When an accident happens, clean the mess and spray immediately. This will cover the odor left and your puppy will not try to mark his territory there again.
Remember that housebreaking a puppy is a big responsibility that can lead to you and your puppy sharing a special bond. Giving encouragement and lots of love will make all the time spent worth your while!

The First Dog is home at last and the Obama Family could not be happy with their new First Dog at the Whitehouse. First dog Bo has made a splash in Washington on the south lawn of his new home with the President and his family.
President Obama is quoted as saying “he has Star Quality” about his new First Dog which is a Portuguese Water Dog breed, a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. In this exlusive video you will see Bo romping around with Sasha and Milia Obama and the President with his wife Michelle all taking turns guiding Bo to his first press conference. Bo did very well and galloped around on his leash for a 6 month old puppy, well at least he did not get out of hand like Barney Bush who snapped at a reporter. The next step in training puppies is to walk the dog often and let him go outside. A special place can be arranged where Bo will go on his daily walks. Puppy training at six months of age for a dog are the formative years of good dog training. Just released is that the First Dog’s name is : Bo and he is a refugee from the Kennedy’s.
So far Bo will make his debut on Tuesday afternoon at the Whitehouse which should be a spectacular event for all dog lovers.
He is a Portuguese Water Dog approximately 6 months old and is black with white markings especially his front paws which look like two socks. In any one’s eyes he is completely and utterly adorable. The Top Dog will be making press release information available and coverage begins Tuesday afternoon. The Puppy looks mature for his age or shall we say Portly. Portuguese Water dogs are known to be good swimmers, friendly, energetic, loving to kids, but also strong willed leaders
The Lillibed Company from Europe has already given President Obama gifts of a Presidential Bowl and Presidential Bed for the new arrival at the Whitehouse.
We are sure Bo will fit in nicely and will carry out his duties with diligence and care and make us dog lovers proud.

I recall it was late February when I first took my puppy to her new home with me, it was when Whoopie was seven weeks old, and it was a little too soon.
That was 5 years ago, when she was just a youngin’.
I say that because it is well known that puppies learn socializing in their latter weeks of life, and interaction with other dogs. Whoopie has never really learned that part, so she often does not know what to do when she meets another dog.
Puppies should stay with the litter and mom at least 8 and even 9 weeks so that they learn about the world and habits that they need to know, such as going outside.
The number one reason people do not keep a puppy is housebreaking the new pet.Proper training is all a matter of structure and Whoopie picked it up quite quickly.
I knew that her bladder could not hold much and I knew that she had to be put outside every 2-3 hours which worked very well.I also put her outside after a meal because food stimulates the bowels to start moving things out.
If the last walk outside was about ten o’clock, Whoopie was good until about 5-6 a.m., and I was not getting much sleep at this time.But as she grew, the time between got longer and she was maturing and her bladder was growing bigger.
There were only 2 instances where we both missed the mark but with time and attention the problem was easier as time passed.
In the case of when you adopt an older dog the dog maybe a little nervous in new surroundings so be very patient.Punishing a new dog in your home is not the way to handle the situation in fact you can make it worse.
Your dog will become anxious and paranoid about messing up which is not what you want.Dogs respond best to praise and rewards work for training so give a treat when your dog does what you want it to do.
A treat is either a pat, or a biscuit, or any sort of reward you wish to give them.

Today with the advent and ease of the internet, over 200,000 dogs are purchased online and that number is climbing higher each year. Although there are some quality breeders who advertise on line, there are many that sell “Puppy Mill” dogs. Some breeder dogs are in good health if they are a legitimate business and have operated for some years. It is easy to check that out with the Better Business Bureau or the American Kennel Association. What is a Puppy Mill? Basically, it is an organization that breeds dogs for profit most often with no regard to humane treatment of the animals, as they are breeding for money.
You may have heard in the news a few days ago about a transport truck the authorities aprended last week with hundreds of dogs crammed in cages in a large transport truck. They found these poor puppies and dogs in crates, which were stacked on top of each other with no ventilation, food or water. Some of the puppy dogs were dead, others were very sick and taken to animal shelter for treatment. It took the animal rescue employees hours to rescue these dogs and clean them from the rotten waste that was in their cages. The dogs were saved from their ill-fated trip across country in this transport truck. Often these trucks are headed for Florida or California where dogs fetch a higher price.
Approximately 5,000 or more Puppy Mills in the United States breed puppies much to the detriment to the health of the mother dogs. They breed dogs too often, and for quantity not quality. Often in the news, you will hear of people who have hundreds of animals in their house. Most times these individuals have serious mental deficiencies or are running a puppy mill in their own homes.
The reason they offer these puppies on line is that they can avoid Federal and State Laws for registering their businesses, inspection of their business and for paying income taxes.
There are only seventeen States that regulate these types of transactions online, and enforce the Puppy Lemon Law. Check with your State government before you even attempt to buy a puppy on line for your own protection and for saving these animals from their fate.
Since you are buying sight unseen, do not be fooled by the pictures, as they often are not the same dog as you are buying at the time you plunk down your hard-earned money.
If your state carries the “ Puppy Lemon Law” like in New Jersey you may be protected somewhat, from unscrupulous dealers who sell sick puppies.
The Lemon Law allows for some protection that you would have to take the puppy to the vet thereby incurring a bill to have a health check done when your puppy arrives.
By that time, you are already hooked on the puppy and would not give it back. Fraud artists prey on the emotions of people to sell dogs that are not healthy.
In some States, you have 24 to 48 hours to get a health report and be able to return the puppy, but how can you do that? Alternatively, you may have 14 days to assess illness such as:
These and other diseases require you to pay for specimens, laboratory tests and vaccinations that should have been completed before you bought the dog
Legislation has not caught up with the fraud artists who also request you send them money by Western Union, or other Money Grams that you should stay away from especially if they come from Nigeria or Africa. Some are in England but they can be all over the world, and what you get is return is nothing.
Dog breeders at Puppy Mills do not check for genetic defects or behavioral problems so you most likely end up with a dog that barks, or exhibits destruction behavior.
Due to the ill treatment they received by these dealers at an early age they become unsociable and damaged adult dogs. Dog kennels and animal rescue centers are stocked with dogs that no one wants to care for many abandoned since they were purchased in this way.
You would be better off getting a good dog and healthy puppy at your local animal shelter. Some are actually much sought after Designer Dogs. These are mixed breed dogs, which is what many people are searching for these days.
Instead of sending profits to a Puppy Mill, try searching for Animal Rescue organizations that actual rescue homeless, and abandoned animals.
The most important element to remember when picking a puppy depends on your own lifestyle, schedule, and ability to care for a dog. The “puppy love” state of getting a dog, is the most captivating, and is an emotional decision. It reminds you of when you were a child, and held your first puppy. However, it should also be a very fun, enjoyable part of dog ownership, if you make the right choice.It should never be a spontaneous decision to get a dog; it requires some good soul searching questions, like what breed to chose, or type of dog.
