It is well known, cats have an absolutely amazing tongue that they use to keep their coat clean and beautiful. Sometimes, especially in what is called “the shedding season”, or for cats with very long or thick fur, your cats own efforts may need some help. Getting an occasional bath can remove a lot of loose hair, which spells less hairballs, and less cat hair on your “fur”niture. It also keeps mats and tangles at bay while keeping kitty looking magnificent.

A warning is being circulated on dog forums everywhere and snopes.com has a listing for cocoa mulch which is highly toxic to pets. If you have gardens and are using this mulch be forewarned that if you pet ingests this mulch it could very likely die.
Cocoa Mulch made from Cocoa Beans
An owner of two young lab mixed puppies bought the cocoa mulch for his garden not knowing of the dangers and it is supposedly sold with the benefit of keeping cats out of your yard.
However their dog calypso was drawn to the mulch because of its chocolaty odor and decided to eat a large amount of it. The next day the dog had seizures and died while on a walk. The autopsy revealed a lethal amount of cocoa beans in the dog’s stomach. In 2007 another dog in Minneapolis died after eating cocoa mulch purchased at a local store.
It is up to Veterinarians, and pet food companies to use their resources to get the word out to pet owners not to buy this product. There are no warnings on the product packaging itself which is sold at most stores like Target, Wal Mart and Home Depot or most gardening stores. The stores themselves do not post warning signs on the product shelves and it is up to pet owners to find this information itself which is highly irresponsible.
Cocoa Mulch is used as a decorative landscaping product and is made of cocoa bean shells which contain:
Toxins called theologize, and a xanthine compound which is similar to caffeine. If your dog or cat or child for that matter eats the mulch due to the enhanced flavor of chocolate -it can lead to convulsions, and death.
Cocoa bean is what chocolate is made of and chocolate is highly toxic to pets.
Cocoa Mulch come in various Brand Names
Look for warning signs of tremors, shaking restlessness and vomiting in your dog especially if you have neighbors that use the mulch product. Do not let your dog out unattended without first removing the substance and while on a walk be careful of neighboring homes that are using cocoa bean mulch.
ALTERNATIVES IN MULCH PRODUCTS:
The alternative decorative mulches also contain resins and oils which are also harmful to your pets. The best tip is to not let your dog near mulched areas of your garden, do not leave your pet unattended. Do not let your dog roam around the neighborhood without supervision. If your dog has ingested any of these substances call the Animal Poison Control Center at: 888-426-4435 or induce vomiting immediately.
If you are using these products consider removing them and replacing with plain old wood chips for mulch. Most mulch is available free from your local city or municipal maintenance department. Or just purchase plain wood chips with no chemical additives.

A friend sent me this wonderful story about a woman who single handedly has designed the Paradise on Earth shelter all by herself. Her name is Lynea Lattanzio who is the founder of The Cat House on the Kings where she takes in and takes care of a remarkable number of cats and dogs who could use a little help.
The only difference is she does not have them in cages, or pens or fences. It is truly amazing that these beautifully kept cats and dogs who look very healthy are in the great outdoors. The animals can go inside and outside anytime they want, food is plentiful everywhere.
The Cat House on the Kings have rescued all kinds of dogs from different breeds and they do get along with the cats very well. There is no pet odor as you would find in a puppy mill as Lynea has help with the up
Moved there in 1983 Lynea finding herself divorced and looked for more purpose in her life and she discovered one 1992 when she volunteered at a local shelter and bottle fed 15 kittens.
She later that year adopted 96 kittens and cats and ended up with 150 cats. Lynea always felt that cats should be able to climb trees and life their life outside of cages. She took in cats that were slated to be destroyed.
She trained herself to take good care of the animals – to the point of having taking care of 16,000 animals in 16 years and each are adoptable.
This is a non-profit home for cats and dogs where they can experience paradise on earth. Please visit their website listed below and contribute what you can give in the way of support or donations.

Some holistic veterinarians believe strongly that vaccinating your dog or cat each year is not necessary and in some cases can prove to cause life threatening diseases.
The jury is still out on the link between human vaccines and the onset shortly afterwards of autism in children.
Dr. Shawn Messonier a DVM is a holistic veterinarian that wrote a book Bible for Dogs and Cats where he outlines the potential harm from vaccines for pets.
Such illnesses as cancer, allergies, and autoimmune diseases are blamed on vaccinations by many veterinarians especially when given each year.
Dr. Messonnier recommends that you ask your vet for a titer test which is a blood test which is done yearly to see if your dog “needs a booster”.
A Titer Test uses a serial dilution and tests how much antibody your dog has in its blood before you order your veterinarian to give your dog vaccinations. The blood is sent to a laboratory to determine the analysis and the results are returned to your veterinarian and you can get a copy of the report yourself to keep a record.
The results are given as a number and the higher the number the healthier your dog, and the lower the number means your dog needs a booster.
Some vets still cannot decide what number determines the need for shots and suggest you give them regardless of the results. Some dogs will not need shots every year and can go 3-4 years without a booster, and others will need them only every 5-10 years.
The titer test costs roughly $ 60.00 and it tests for distemper, and the parvovirus rather than just vaccinating indiscriminately without knowing whether the pet requires a booster.
When you consider the lifespan of an animal from 10 to 15 years or more usually the initial vaccination and a booster 1 year later is sufficient for the life of the animal.
The advantage of the test is that your dog will not receive too many vaccines which can harm the immune system and your dog will remain healthier. It is worth the cost of the test and far less expensive than needless vaccines.

Saying for the Dog Lover:
“ If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only one of them”.
There are few organizations that help low income families to pay for high veterinarian bills when emergencies arise that can wipe out funds needed for food, and rent. Not all families can afford to have pets but it is difficult at best to keep a dog or cat these days if pet care is out of reach for a family.
The benefits of having a pet would not be available to children and a family who would love to care for animals. An organization called RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation has an aim which is to help low-income families, the elderly, and individuals to keep vet bills low or at no cost in Rhode Island. They exist through generous support of donations and gifts from the public which are totally tax deductible.
The Human Society of the United States:The Human Society of the United States for many years has been championing the cause of pet abuse; puppy mills, disaster rescues, and helping stray animals find homes. In these tough economic times as families struggle to pay bills, and with high prices for food, heat and shelter animals will be abandoned as a result of home foreclosures. Many people leave their pets in abandoned homes due to the mortgage crisis and move away.A new Grant Program by the Human Society of the United States is being launched to keep pets and families together. If you can make a donation to the Human Society to keep this program funded Please help by doing that here today:
Angels4 Animals Guardian Angels for Animals:This organization and I have to agree with their motto that the way a society treats its animals and the less fortunate is a reflection of that society’s worth and compassion. The numbers are staggering in that 117,000 pets are put to sleep each week in America due to financial hardship, and the inability to pay for emergency care for a dog or cat. Here is where Pet insurance companies could make a difference for low income families and lower their rates for coverage’s for emergency care and accidents.A family should not have to choose between paying a veterinarian bill and having a pet put to sleep.
Angels4Animals is a non-profit organization that rely on donations from the public and who work with a network of veterinarian clinics across the United States.
If you are facing financial hardships please get in touch with your local Human Society or Angels4Animals or speak to your veterinarian who should know of organizations that could help you with the vet bill.
