It’s essential for Dog parents like you to know certain basic factors that determine your relationship with your Dog and can go a long way in training him effectively.
Before you begin training your Dog, it is absolutely essential that you build a loving bond with him. This is important as it helps you to understand his needs and instincts and also allows your Dog to have complete trust in you.
Building a bond with your Dog is the first and the most crucial step involved in training him successfully. As soon as you bring your Dog home, you must first try to develop a caring and loving relationship with him in order to win his trust and confidence.
When Dogs are secure in the knowledge that they belong to the family, they are more likely to respond better to their owners’ training commands. Just like with any relationship, there must be mutual trust and respect between you and your Dog.
Trust takes time to develop and respect comes from defining boundaries and treating any breach of those boundaries with firmness and fairness.
Without enforceable limitations, respect can’t be developed. And when there is no respect, building a bond with your Dog is almost impossible.

Love Your Dog and He Will Love You back
Once you’re succesful in building a bond with your Dog, you can rest assured that training him and teaching him new and clever tricks will be a cakewalk.
Your Dog’s learning period can be divided into five phases:
The Teaching Phase – This is the phase where you must physically demonstrate to your Dog exactly what you want him to do.
The Practicing Phase – Practice makes Perfect. Once a lesson is learnt, practice with your Dog what you have just taught him.
The Generalizing Phase – Here you must continue practicing with your Dog in different locations and in an environment with a few distractions. You can take your Dog out for a walk, or to a nearby park and command him to practice whatever you’ve taught him.
Practicing the learned lessons in multiple locations and in the presence of small distractions will help him learn and retain lessons better .
The Testing Phase – Once you’re sure that your Dog has achieved almost 90% success….he responds correctly almost every time you give a command, you must start testing his accuracy in newer locations with a lot of distractions.
Example: Take him to the local shopping mall and ask him to obey your command. He may not come up with the correct response the very first time you do this, but you must not lose hope.
The idea is to test your Dog to see how he responds in an environment which is new to him. Set-up a situation where you are in control of the environment and your Dog.
There are only 2 possibilities:
Your Dog succeeds!!! (Trumpets please!)
In case your Dog fails, re-examine the situation. Review and/or change your training. Then try testing again.
Keep on testing until he succeeds. Follow the rule of the 3 Ps – patience, persistence, praise.
Internalizing Phase – Finally, comes the extremely rewarding phase where your Dog does everything he is taught to do even without your commands.
Remember:
Never scold your Dog if he fails. It’s not his fault. You have failed as a trainer!
You must be patient and persistent for your efforts to show rewards.
Appreciate and love your Dog when he does it right! A little encouragement will work wonders for your Dog.
Getting a puppy is an exciting time for both the family and the puppy. When a puppy comes into a home, it will be exposed to a variety of new sights, sounds, and places to explore. This can be a very overwhelming and stressful time for the little critter. It is important for the owner to help the puppy adjust and become a well-behaved adult dog. What Most Pet Owners Do Not Know about their Dog
The one trait or aspiration in a dog is to become The Leader of the Pack. This is known as the Alpha Dog Syndrome -or the ability for you to remain the Master and the dog your pack follower.
Have you ever seen a person walking the dog and the dog is walking ahead of the person? That is being the Alpha Dog. A properly trained dog follows slightly behind its owner at the left hand side. The dog follows the person -not the other way around. If your dog is peeing on the rug or stealing food from your kitchen counter -the dog is trying to outwit you and become the Alpha Dog again you have to discourage this behavior before it sets in your dog’s mind that it is acceptable to you.
This is a basic training technique that instills in the dog that YOU are the TOP DOG not them and you should come first, walk first, eat first and be first out of the front door of your house.
These are amazing ways to tell your dog that you are the Master and once this is established further training is a breeze. Therefore when you walk your dog make them “HEEL” and obey your commands quickly.
Do not let them lead you on the leash or they will think they come first and will become the Alpha Dog and you are the follower. Many pet owners make this mistake and “allow” this behavior and then they get upset when the dog does not obey other commands. Push gently on the dog’s chest area ….not on its head but pushing the chest means something to a dog. It means you are the Master and the dog will get the drift.

It is probable that these dogs are not innately aggressive or even the victims of prior abuse. Most likely, these behaviors are a result of poor socialization. The outstretched hand, the broom, the bearded man; all are simply unfamiliar to the dog. It is a dog’s survival instinct to view the unfamiliar as a potential threat until they have had a number of positive experiences to prove otherwise. When your dog is faced with the unfamiliar and feels threatened rather than curious it is natural for the dog to employ aggression to make the scary thing go away.
The puppy socialization period is generally thought of as between three weeks of age and twelve weeks of age. At this time of a puppy’s life they have a natural curiosity and will approach and investigate a great deal. They are also learning to form social relationships both with their litter mates and with humans. In terms of the development of desired behaviors and a good temperament, this is the most influential period in a dog’s life. The experiences your dog has during this time will affect him for the rest of his life. It’s up to you to make sure that these experiences are positive. While the earlier weeks are very, very important to proper socialization, don’t think that you should stop there! Your puppy will need your guidance well through his first year. And, while I’m talking a lot about puppies here, the reality is that many of us have older dogs that were not well socialized. You can still socialize your adult dog as you would a puppy but bear in mind that there may be situations in which an older dog has developed a negative association. These situations must be handled more delicately and will take more time. You may find it prudent to use an experienced dog trainer.
As mentioned earlier, dog socialization is getting your dog comfortable with the environment in which he or she lives. We must expose them in a safe, encouraging, and fun way to the many experiences they will have in their lifetime. Some of these experiences we will take for granted but let’s remember that a puppy doesn’t know anything yet and doesn’t know that we are there to protect them. Some of the things a dog may find scary are different walking surfaces, unfamiliar sounds, people, clothing, behaviors, objects, other dogs, and other animals.
Here are a few examples to get you thinking about how your dog may be seeing the world:
Clothing: hats, hoods, scarves, mittens, big bulky jackets, backpacks
Behaviors toward dogs: petting, hugging, patting, playing with ears or tail, nail clipping, brushing
Objects: noisy appliances, brooms, umbrellas, trash bags, dog crate, leashes
So with all of these things in mind that could pose a problem for your dog you’re probably wondering just what it is that you can do to properly socialize your dog. If you follow these basic rules and ensure that the majority of experiences your dog has are positive then you will likely have a happy dog with a healthy mental outlook:
Never force or even cajole your dog to approach something of which he is unsure. Let your puppy determine when and how he will approach the situation.
Make sure that the experience will be safe and pleasant for your dog. For example, if you are exposing your puppy to children who are playing loudly, keep your dog at a distance. You could give him a couple of treats so he will make a positive association with the experience. Let him wander over to explore only when he is ready.
There will be times when a new experience goes badly. Your job in this instance is to stay calm and neutral. You should not run to his side in order to tell him everything will be all right! This will erode his confidence. Instead, make sure you get many more positive experiences in order to make up for this bad one. Always use a happy, playful voice to let your dog know that it is ok.

Tip 1 – Alway apply a Leash to your dog when outdoors
A lot of owners feel leashing their dog is cruel and inhibiting. While taking a stroll around the neighborhood, visiting parks, or going to other public places, they’ll leave the leash at home. That’s a bad idea. Even if your pooch has been properly vaccinated and has his tags, keeping him on a leash is best for everyone – including him.
Tip 2 – Spay Or Neuter Your Pet
If you are not a dog breeder, there is no reason not to spay or neuter your pet dog. In fact, doing so can help him live a longer, healthier life. Also, it’s worth noting that one of the leading causes of homeless mutts is that their owners fail to have their pets “fixed.” That leads to a greater number of pooches being placed into shelters and eventually euthanized.
Tip 3 – Enroll Him In Obedience Training

Not only will he learn what type of behavior is acceptable and what isn’t, but the training will also improve the relationship you share together.
Tip 4 – Give Him Exercise
Dogs are physical creatures and as such need daily activity for a wide variety of reasons. First, if you spend most of the day away from home, he’s going to have pent-up energy. He needs a way to release it. Second, daily exercise keeps your dog healthy and enthusiastic. Take him for a walk in the morning and again during the evening. You’ll find that providing exercise for him will keep him happy and healthy.

Understand Your Dog Basic Needs
Having a dog is a responsibility. If you don’t satisfy your dog’s basic needs, you shouldn’t be surprised if your dog behaves badly. What are the basic needs? Here are the main ones:
water and food
sufficient exercise
company and social interaction
an environment which stimulates him.
The main point in dog training is to utilise positive and negative reinforcement. When your dog engages in a behavior that is wanted, you should reward him with a treat or affection. It’s vital that the reward comes immediately after the desired action or the two things will not be connected by the dog.
It’s best to focus on positive reinforcement for desired behaviors rather than negative reinforcement for undesired behaviors. This has been found to be a more productive way of training.
Physical punishment is not productive or compassionate way to train dogs and will only lead to a fearful and neurotic dog. You can say a firm “No” in a growling tone of voice to stop him behaving badly. Perhaps most effective is to ignore your dog when he misbehaves. Dogs crave attention and being ignored is negative reinforcement enough.
At all costs you should avoid humanizing your dog. It will help you to do this if you study dog communication and the dynamics of a dog pack. You need to learn what their body language means. They have various ways of communicating: with their tail, head position, ear position, mouth and teeth and vocally with various kinds of barks, growls and whines.
Being pack leader or alpha dog is vital if you want your dog to behave well. If your dog is the alpha dog, you will be fighting a losing battle to get him to behave as you want. Why would he take notice of one of his pack member? Some advice on setting yourself up as pack leader:
-eat a biscuit or two in front of your dog just before you feed him. The alpha dog always eats first.
-don’t let him to get on the bed or sofa. The alpha dog sleeps on higher ground.
-make sure you go through doors before your dog.
This is an introduction to some important points in obedience training for dogs. I recommend you look into the most systematic of training methods: clicker training for dogs.
Although it Puppy Training and housebreaking doesn’t sound like the most appealing job in the world, housebreaking a new puppy will play an important part in bonding with the newest member of your family. Home Puppy Training will teach you patience and leave you with a better understanding of what your puppy wants once he has learned. In addition, he will learn acceptable behaviors and exactly what is expected of him to live happily and comfortably in his new home.
It’s important to remember that, just like a small child, a puppy’s attention span is very short. When you teach a young child not to hit, he likely won’t learn the lesson the first time, but instead, gradually after you’ve shown him repeatedly that it’s not okay. Similarly, you will have to be consistent with your dog when training him. Also, when housebreaking your puppy, keep in mind that he is not intentionally being a bad dog; he just has not yet learned what behaviors are acceptable!
Start housebreaking your puppy with a simple feeding schedule. Give him breakfast, lunch and dinner, just as you would yourself. By doing this you will be helping him become regular with his bowel movements. Once he has eaten, wait 20-30 minutes and then take him outside. Watch how long it takes before he is able to void. This will give you an idea of how long to wait the next time you take him out. (Within about a week, you should have his schedule down.) Try to never let him eat at free will, leaving food in his bowl all day, because it will cause him to have accidents and make housetraining all that much more difficult.
Despite the old rules of training a puppy, you should never hit, rub his nose in his messes, or yell at your puppy. By doing this, you are telling him it is bad to relieve himself at all! In addition, most dogs respond negatively to aggressive and mean behavior and it has the opposite effect—they regress in their training rather than advance. Instead, while housebreaking your puppy take him straight outside when he has an accident. In addition, don’t forget the praise! Every time he “goes” where he’s supposed to, praise him lavishly, and soon he will begin to understand exactly what brings praise, and what brings that disappointed face. During the process, don’t forget that full control of the bladder and bowels won’t happen until 16 weeks of age, so don’t expect too much from your puppy in the beginning.
Also helpful in housebreaking a new puppy is to buy a stain remover/ odor relief spray. Household cleaners and sprays cannot be smelled by dogs; only those made for animals will work. When an accident happens, clean the mess and spray immediately. This will cover the odor left and your puppy will not try to mark his territory there again.
Remember that housebreaking a puppy is a big responsibility that can lead to you and your puppy sharing a special bond. Giving encouragement and lots of love will make all the time spent worth your while!
